1. INDIA CONDUCTS MAIDEN TEST OF NUCLEAR-CAPABLE ICBM –

• India conducted a maiden test of a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) off the Odisha coast on 8 May 2026. The launch took place from Abdul Kalam Island near Chandipur, and the missile test involved a danger corridor of about 3,560 km over the Bay of Bengal.

Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles

• An intercontinental ballistic missile is a long-range ballistic missile with a range of more than 5,500 km. ICBMs are designed to deliver conventional or nuclear warheads over intercontinental distances and follow a ballistic trajectory after powered flight.

Odisha Test Range

• Abdul Kalam Island, earlier known as Wheeler Island, is a missile test site off the Odisha coast. The island lies near Chandipur, which is associated with India’s Integrated Test Range under the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

Pre-Launch Procedures and Related Trials

• India issued a Notice to Airmen for the Bay of Bengal from 6 May to 9 May 2026 before the launch. The missile test followed the maiden flight trial of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation glide weapon system on 7 May 2026, also off the Odisha coast.

भारत ने परमाणु क्षमता वाली अंतरमहाद्वीपीय बैलिस्टिक मिसाइल (आईसीबीएम) का पहला परीक्षण किया –

• भारत ने 8 मई 2026 को ओडिशा तट से दूर परमाणु क्षमता वाली अंतरमहाद्वीपीय बैलिस्टिक मिसाइल (आईसीबीएम) का पहला परीक्षण किया। यह परीक्षण चांदीपुर के पास अब्दुल कलाम द्वीप से किया गया और इसमें बंगाल की खाड़ी के ऊपर लगभग 3,560 किलोमीटर के खतरे वाले गलियारे का उपयोग किया गया।

अंतरमहाद्वीपीय बैलिस्टिक मिसाइलें

• एक अंतरमहाद्वीपीय बैलिस्टिक मिसाइल 5,500 किलोमीटर से अधिक की दूरी तक मार करने वाली लंबी दूरी की बैलिस्टिक मिसाइल होती है। आईसीबीएम को अंतरमहाद्वीपीय दूरी पर पारंपरिक या परमाणु युद्धक सामग्री पहुंचाने के लिए डिज़ाइन किया गया है और संचालित उड़ान के बाद यह एक बैलिस्टिक प्रक्षेप पथ का अनुसरण करती है।

ओडिशा परीक्षण रेंज

• अब्दुल कलाम द्वीप, जिसे पहले व्हीलर द्वीप के नाम से जाना जाता था, ओडिशा तट से दूर एक मिसाइल परीक्षण स्थल है। यह द्वीप चांदीपुर के पास स्थित है, जो रक्षा अनुसंधान और विकास संगठन (आर.ए.) के अंतर्गत भारत की एकीकृत परीक्षण रेंज से संबद्ध है।

प्रक्षेपण-पूर्व प्रक्रियाएँ और संबंधित परीक्षण

• प्रक्षेपण से पहले भारत ने 6 मई से 9 मई 2026 तक बंगाल की खाड़ी के लिए वायुसैनिकों को नोटिस जारी किया था। मिसाइल परीक्षण 7 मई 2026 को ओडिशा तट के पास सामरिक उन्नत रेंज संवर्धन ग्लाइड हथियार प्रणाली के पहले उड़ान परीक्षण के बाद किया गया था।

 

2. VICE ADMIRAL KRISHNA SWAMINATHAN APPOINTED NEXT NAVY CHIEF –

• Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan was appointed as the next Chief of the Naval Staff of India on 9 May 2026. He is scheduled to assume office on 31 May 2026 and will succeed Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, who retires on the same date.

Chief of the Naval Staff

• The Chief of the Naval Staff is the professional head of the Indian Navy and one of the three service chiefs in India. The post is held by a four-star officer and is part of the higher defence leadership structure under the Ministry of Defence.

Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan

• Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 1 July 1987. He specialises in Communication and Electronic Warfare, which are branches linked to naval command, signals, and electronic countermeasures.

Western Naval Command

• Before this appointment, he served as the Western Naval Commander in Mumbai. The Western Naval Command is one of the three operational commands of the Indian Navy and has its headquarters at Mumbai, Maharashtra.

उप-प्रधानमंत्री कृष्णा स्वामीनाथन को नौसेना प्रमुख नियुक्त किया गया –

• उप-प्रधानमंत्री कृष्णा स्वामीनाथन को 9 मई 2026 को भारत के नौसेना प्रमुख के रूप में नियुक्त किया गया। वे 31 मई 2026 को पदभार ग्रहण करेंगे और एडमिरल दिनेश के. त्रिपाठी का स्थान लेंगे, जो उसी तिथि को सेवानिवृत्त हो रहे हैं।

नौसेना प्रमुख

• नौसेना प्रमुख भारतीय नौसेना के पेशेवर प्रमुख और भारत में तीन सेवा प्रमुखों में से एक हैं। यह पद चार सितारा अधिकारी के पास होता है और रक्षा मंत्रालय के अधीन उच्च रक्षा नेतृत्व संरचना का हिस्सा है।

वाइस एडमिरल कृष्णा स्वामीनाथन

• वाइस एडमिरल कृष्णा स्वामीनाथन 1 जुलाई 1987 को भारतीय नौसेना में कमीशन प्राप्त हुए। वे संचार और इलेक्ट्रॉनिक युद्ध में विशेषज्ञ हैं, जो नौसेना कमान, सिग्नल और इलेक्ट्रॉनिक प्रतिउपायों से संबंधित शाखाएं हैं।

पश्चिमी नौसेना कमान

• इस नियुक्ति से पहले, उन्होंने मुंबई में पश्चिमी नौसेना कमांडर के रूप में कार्य किया। पश्चिमी नौसेना कमान भारतीय नौसेना की तीन परिचालन कमानों में से एक है और इसका मुख्यालय मुंबई, महाराष्ट्र में स्थित है।

 

3. LT GEN N S RAJA SUBRAMANI APPOINTED INDIA’S NEXT CDS –

• Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani (Retd.) was appointed as India’s next Chief of Defence Staff on 9 May 2026. He will take charge from General Anil Chauhan on 30 May 2026 and will also serve as Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs.

Chief of Defence Staff in India

• The Chief of Defence Staff is the senior-most military officer in India’s armed forces. The office was created in 2019 after the recommendations of the Kargil Review Committee and the Group of Ministers on defence reforms.

Career Profile of Lt Gen N S Raja Subramani

• Lt Gen N S Raja Subramani served as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat from 1 September 2025. He was Vice Chief of the Army Staff from 1 July 2024 to 31 July 2025 and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Army’s Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024.

लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल एन एस राजा सुब्रमणि भारत के अगले चीफ ऑफ डिफेंस स्टाफ नियुक्त –

• लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल एन एस राजा सुब्रमणि (सेवानिवृत्त) को 9 मई 2026 को भारत का अगला चीफ ऑफ डिफेंस स्टाफ नियुक्त किया गया। वे 30 मई 2026 को जनरल अनिल चौहान से पदभार ग्रहण करेंगे और साथ ही भारत सरकार के सैन्य मामलों के विभाग में सचिव के रूप में भी कार्य करेंगे।

भारत में चीफ ऑफ डिफेंस स्टाफ

• चीफ ऑफ डिफेंस स्टाफ भारत के सशस्त्र बलों में सर्वोच्च सैन्य अधिकारी होते हैं। कारगिल समीक्षा समिति और रक्षा सुधारों पर मंत्रियों के समूह की सिफारिशों के बाद 2019 में इस पद का सृजन किया गया था।

लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल एन एस राजा सुब्रमणि का करियर प्रोफाइल

• लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल एन एस राजा सुब्रमणि ने 1 सितंबर 2025 से राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा परिषद सचिवालय में सैन्य सलाहकार के रूप में कार्य किया। वे 1 जुलाई 2024 से 31 जुलाई 2025 तक सेना के उप प्रमुख और मार्च 2023 से जून 2024 तक सेना की केंद्रीय कमान के जनरल ऑफिसर कमांडिंग-इन-चीफ रहे।

 

4. CHINA CONFIRMS TECHNICAL SUPPORT TO PAKISTAN –

• China confirmed on 7 May 2026 that it provided on-site technical support to Pakistan during a four-day conflict with India in May 2025. The confirmation concerned Chinese personnel involvement in an India-Pakistan clash linked to the military operation India called Operation Sindoor.

Operation Sindoor and the 2025 Conflict

• The conflict began on 7 May 2025 after a militant attack in Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir on 22 April 2025 killed 26 civilians. Indian forces launched strikes on nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir, and India stated that the sites were used to plan the attack.

चीन ने पाकिस्तान को तकनीकी सहायता की पुष्टि की –

• चीन ने 7 मई 2026 को पुष्टि की कि उसने मई 2025 में भारत के साथ चार दिवसीय संघर्ष के दौरान पाकिस्तान को मौके पर तकनीकी सहायता प्रदान की थी। यह पुष्टि भारत-पाकिस्तान संघर्ष में चीनी कर्मियों की संलिप्तता से संबंधित थी, जो भारत द्वारा चलाए गए सैन्य अभियान ‘ऑपरेशन सिंदूर’ से जुड़ा था।

• 22 अप्रैल 2025 को भारतीय प्रशासित कश्मीर के पहलगाम में हुए आतंकवादी हमले में 26 नागरिकों की मौत के बाद 7 मई 2025 को संघर्ष शुरू हुआ। भारतीय सेना ने पाकिस्तान और पाकिस्तान प्रशासित जम्मू और कश्मीर में नौ ठिकानों पर हमले किए और भारत ने दावा किया कि इन ठिकानों का इस्तेमाल हमले की योजना बनाने के लिए किया गया था।

 

5. SUVENDU ADHIKARI SWORN IN AS WEST BENGAL CHIEF MINISTER –

• Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on 9 May 2026. He became the first Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Minister of the state and the 9th person to hold the office in West Bengal.

West Bengal Chief Ministership

• West Bengal is a state in eastern India, and the Chief Minister is the head of the elected state government under Article 164 of the Constitution of India. The Governor of West Bengal administers the oath of office to the Chief Minister under the constitutional procedure.

2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly Election

• The Bharatiya Janata Party won 207 of 294 seats in the 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election. The result ended the Trinamool Congress government’s 15-year tenure in the state.

सुवेंदु अधिकारी ने पश्चिम बंगाल के मुख्यमंत्री के रूप में शपथ ली –

• सुवेंदु अधिकारी ने 9 मई 2026 को पश्चिम बंगाल के मुख्यमंत्री के रूप में शपथ ली। वे राज्य के पहले भारतीय जनता पार्टी के मुख्यमंत्री और पश्चिम बंगाल में इस पद को संभालने वाले 9वें व्यक्ति बने।

पश्चिम बंगाल में मुख्यमंत्री पद

• पश्चिम बंगाल पूर्वी भारत का एक राज्य है और भारत के संविधान के अनुच्छेद 164 के तहत मुख्यमंत्री निर्वाचित राज्य सरकार के प्रमुख होते हैं। पश्चिम बंगाल के राज्यपाल संवैधानिक प्रक्रिया के तहत मुख्यमंत्री को पद की शपथ दिलाते हैं।

2026 पश्चिम बंगाल विधानसभा चुनाव

• 2026 पश्चिम बंगाल विधानसभा चुनाव में भारतीय जनता पार्टी ने 294 में से 207 सीटें जीतीं। इस परिणाम के साथ राज्य में तृणमूल कांग्रेस सरकार का 15 साल का कार्यकाल समाप्त हो गया।
