Exam pattern and changes in IBPS RRB-Assistant Pre
As the competition is becoming tougher every year, due to the increasing number of aspirants for these exams therefore the recruiting body is making some changes every year in the exam pattern to make exams tougher and to select the candidate, who is best in all aspects. If we look into the following tables we can observe, how the pattern changed in the previous years and what we can expect to come in an IBPS Assistant 2018 exam and what not?
Quantitative section
First of all, if we analyse the following table for this section, there is not any major change in the set of questions but level of questions is becoming difficult every year. In 2015, the questions asked in prelims were very easy but in 2017, the questions were easy to moderate level. So, we can expect that, this time IBPS RRB Assistant PRE 2018 will be quite difficult than last year but the pattern can be expected to be same.
We can also expect that we can get some more calculative questions from data interpretation (Bar graph, Pie chart, Table chart)
Topic | Years | |||
2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018 (Expected)
Series | 5(M) | 5(M) | 5(E) | 5 |
Data interpretation(single graph) | 5(D) | 5(M) | 5(M) | 5 |
Quadratic equation | – | – | – | – |
Simplification/approximation | 15(E) | 15(E) | 15(E-M) | 15 |
Miscellaneous (Profit loss, T&D, SI, CI etc) | 15(E-M) | 15(M) | 15(M) | 15 |
*E = Easy, M = Moderate, D = Difficult
Reasoning
If we look at the following table, we can simply say that, now IBPS RRB Assistant is focusing more on miscellaneous part, thus we are just expecting 7-8 questions from this topic and not focusing on syllogisms. For seating arrangements and puzzles, there were around 10 questions out of 40 in 2016, 10-12 questions out of 40 in 2017, so we can expect around 12-15 questions from this but the numbers of sets for these will be mere, that means they are making examination lengthier. There will be 5 questions from inequality. So, overall we can expect an easy to moderate level questions in this section.
Topics | Years | |||
2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018 | |
Syllogisms | 5(E-M)) | 5(M) | 5(E) | 2-3 |
Sitting arrangements (Linear ,circle) | 10(E-M) | – | 5(M) | 5-7 |
Puzzle | 5(E-M) | 10(M) | 5(M) | 6-7 |
Inequality | 5(E) | 5(E) | 5(E) | 3-4 |
Miscellaneous | 5(E-M) | 10(M) | 5(E) | 7-8 |
Direction sense | – | 5(E) | 2-3
Coding decoding | 5(M) | – | 5(E) | 2-3 |
Logical reasoning | 5(E-M) | – | – | – |
Series Numeric /alpha numeric | – | 5(E) | 10(E) | 8-10 |
*E = Easy, M = Moderate, D = Difficult
Exam pattern and changes in RRB Assistant Mains
Quant
For this section, we can observe that there is no change in number of question in quadratic equation but the difficulty level has been increased a lot and there is change in pattern of quadratic equation was used last year in RRB Assistant 2017. So the expectation for this year is same new pattern with a bit of increase in difficulty level, as they are continuously increasing the difficulty level from last three years.
Now in IBPS RRB. Every mains exam comprises 5-10 data sufficiency question (moderate-difficult level). So we are expecting the same but in a new pattern and this might be surprise topic in this section. Question from probability can be expected and a difficult one. Out of 40 questions, we can except around 10-15 question from (D.I) data interpretation section and most of these can be from the arithmetic part including caselet DI. So, one should mainly focus on basics of arithmetic part and then practice the questions of D.I from.
Quantitative aptitude

Number series | 5(E) | – | – | 5 |

Geometry | – | – | – | – |
Miscellaneous | 15(E-M) | 20(M-D) | 13(M) | 7-9 |
*E = Easy, M = Moderate, D = Difficult
Reasoning
Reasoning was the difficult section in IBPS RRB Assistant mains 2017 and the difficulty level of sitting arrangement & puzzle high comprises 10 marks. So, we are expecting, the topic will cover at least 10 -15 marks.
There were 5 questions from input-output topic and 5 questions from coding-decoding and we are expecting same number of questions from input output and coding decoding, this year also. We can expect some surprises in coding-decoding and data sufficiency topics.
Topics | 2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018 (EXPECTED) |
Sitting arrangements (Linear ,circle) | 10(E) | 10(M) | 10(M) | 5 |

Series Numeric /Alpha numeric | 2(M) | – | 8(M) | 4-5 |
*E = Easy, M = Moderate, D = Difficult
English
We can observe from the table, that there have been a lot of changes in the English section in these years. The numbers of question asked from comprehension topic has been reduced to half (approximately) and the parajumbled topic is also reduced to two questions as they are replaced by parafillers in which we have to fill two sentences (correct) in a paragraph, we can also expect sentence connectors in which we have to connect two sentences using connectors.
With continuously change in distributions of marks according to topics, especially in the mains exam, we need to have a close look on the pattern changes in previous years, so that we can analyse the trend properly and accurately.
Now, if we talk about sentence fillers, the question from this topic have been increasing because it checks the understanding of the whole English language of the candidates. So we can expect maximum 10 questions from it.
We can expect that English section would be the difficult one and students should practice more and more of these topics.
Topics | 2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018(Expected) |
Reading Comprehension | 10(E) | 10(M-) | 14(M) | 12-15 |

How To Approach The IBPS RRB-Assistant Exam
For prelim Exam focus on getting 20+ marks in each section (As Nothing about Sectional cut-off is given in advertisement) and 70+ marks in prelims overall. For specific areas we need to plan as following:
A: Quantitative Aptitude: For Quant focus on Series / Approximation / Calculation/ Data interpretation. These will cover 25 Qns. out of 40 in quant. 15 Qns. will be from entire Arithmetic. In mains exam, focus mainly on the arithmetic part and new pattern of quadratic equations. So no need to put extra effort on entire arithmetic. Do the focused study only.
B: Logical Reasoning: For prelim focus on Syllogism, inequalities, Sitting arrangement, input output and Puzzles. In mains we shall have 10-15 Qns. from reasoning especially Puzzles, sitting arrangement, input output etc. So prepare for the prelim only till August and then there will be sufficient time to prepare for the computer section after the prelims.
C: General Economy & Banking Awareness: Keep in touch with daily current affairs specifically the financial updates. After the prelim exam prepare for last 4 to 5 months current affairs and banking awareness. 40 Qns.40 marks this section is considered to be the differential section. A student can score 30 to 35 marks in the stipulated time with the organized study plan.
English Language: Looking at the recent trends this section has seen a steep rise in the difficulty level of the exam. In prelim we expect to have 10 Qns. from Comprehension, 10 cloze test, 5 para jumbles and 10 grammatical errors or sentence improvement or phrase replacement. So keep solving more and more comprehensions and read the Hind u Editorials to improve the command over English language. In mains also the difficulty level is very high and we need to prepare accordingly. In 40 Qns. of mains exam we expect 2 comprehensions of 20 marks. 5 para jumbles, 5 cloze test and 5 errors. So again here the focus is on comprehension. But practise as much as possible and do more and more reading for better performance in this section.
